Burl F. Williams
Burl graduated from the University of South Carolina, where he majored in history and political science. After graduation, he went on to obtain his law degree from the University of South Carolina School of Law. In law school, Burl was selected for the South Carolina Law Review, and served as an Articles Editor. During his final summer before graduation, Burl served as a law clerk for the South Carolina Attorney General, assisting in the Capital Litigation Division.
After law school, Burl clerked for Justice John W. Kittredge at the South Carolina Supreme Court. Following his clerkship, he entered the private practice of law. Burl enjoyed a short stint at the McNair Law Firm before moving over to Nexsen Pruet, where he made partner and practiced for nearly a decade. During his final seven years at the firm, he was mentored by, and worked directly with, William W. “Billy” Wilkins, former Chief Judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit.
Like many South Carolinians, Burl’s family has a strong history of military service. Beginning with his fifth great grandfather’s service in the Revolutionary War, one of Burl’s grandfathers has served in every major military war faced by our Nation. Burl is no different. He served four years active duty in the Navy. Part of that service was on board an aircraft carrier in the Arabian Sea in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.
Burl is licensed to practice in South Carolina state court, the United States District Court for the District of South Carolina, and the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit. Burl has also been admitted Pro Hac Vice in Federal District Courts of New York, Rhode Island, West Virginia, and Georgia.
Burl and his wife live in Greenville, where they are actively raising their three children. They are both active in their church and civic affairs.
Selected by his peers for inclusion in Greenville Business Magazine’s Legal Elite of the Upstate since 2018 and named a Super Lawyer in the area of Business Litigation in 2023 and 2024.
